Schedule and Location

Virginia Tech's Executive Ph.D. program welcomes a new cohort each August, with a required summer intensive prior to the official fall start of the program. Students should be prepared to make a ~3-year commitment to build the credentials needed to earn this Ph.D. degree.

The program utilizes a hybrid delivery format to allow for high-quality interactions, while still providing the flexibility needed for students to continue in their full-time, professional roles.

The majority of in-person residencies are held at Virginia Tech's extended campus location just outside Washington, D.C. to provide convenient transport links for working professionals.

Schedule

Classes and seminars are held once a month (Fridays and Saturdays) in-person in our VT Arlington Executive Briefing Center (nearest metro Ballston) to minimize impact on normal work hours.

The in-person residencies are held monthly during the first two years of the program, and less frequently during the third year when students are working on their dissertation proposals. During Year 1, students should plan on attending 10 residencies. In Year 2 also, there will be 10 residencies. In Year 3, there are only four residencies. No formal residencies are expected beyond that point.

The detailed schedule of class meetings for the next 3 years is posted here.

Location

Most of the in-person residencies are held just outside Washington, D.C. in the VT Arlington Executive Briefing Center (nearest metro Ballston). Nearby airports include Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (13.6 miles), Dulles International Airport (18.5 miles), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (47.2 miles). Both National and Dulles airports have metros that can take students directly to our classroom building.

Starting Spring of 2025 our Executive Ph.D. program will relocate to the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Potomac Yards. A location that is also easily accessible from all major airports.
